  • Coach K gives praise to Marcus Smart
Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca received a text from USAB head coach Mike Krzyzewski praising Marcus Smart's play with the USAB Select Team.

Advice: Coach K thought that Smart was "fantastic" as he reportedly held his own against some of the league's top guards. He has been hailed as a great defensive player, but his offense still needs time to develop. Smart could be worth a late-round flier, but with Rajon Rondo in town, his fantasy outlook is bleak.

  • Report: Clippers to recruit UFA Ray Allen
The Clippers will reportedly make a push to sign unrestricted free agent Ray Allen.

Advice: The Clippers will only be able to offer Allen the veteran's minimum (which is also true for the Cavs), but it's difficult to see him landing a more lucrative offer elsewhere. Whether he reunites with LeBron James in Cleveland, or Doc Rivers in Los Angeles, he should not be targeted in standard leagues.

  • Gustavo Ayon has received interest from SA
Unrestricted free agent Gustavo Ayon has reportedly received interest from the Spurs.

Advice: Ayon has also received a contract offer from a Chinese team, but he has stated he wants to wait until after the FIBA World Cup before making a decision on where he will play next year. Ayon averaged 4.3 points, and 4.8 rebounds through 17 minutes of action with the Hawks last season, and considering he would likely see even less time on the floor in SA, owners can safely ignore him come draft day.

  • Manu Ginobili has statue erected in Argentina
A statue was erected in Buenos Aires, Argentina in honor of Manu Ginobili.

Advice: While Ginobili will not be able to participate in this year's FIBA World Cup, this should serve as a nice consolation prize. Ginobili, a four-time champion with the San Antonio Spurs, was the main reason Argentina took home the gold medal during the 2004 Olympic games, and clearly he is beloved in his home country. Ginobili is at the tail end of his career, and concern of his health mixed with random DNP-CD's severely limits his fantasy appeal.

  • Brook Lopez feels he's in for a career-season
Brook Lopez is confident heading into the 2014-15 season, and he believes he'll be better than he's ever been.

Advice: "Like I said before, I'm not looking for any restrictions," Lopez told ESPN New York and Newsday Friday. "I'm confident I'm gonna be able to go out there and be better than I've ever been." Lopez has had two injury-plagued seasons during his career, but didn't miss a single game during his first three seasons in the league. He'll be a risky selection on draft day, but when healthy, Lopez is capable of putting up truly elite value at the center position.

  • DeMarcus Cousins: 'I am a role model'
DeMarcus Cousins explained why he sees himself as a role model during a recent interview.

Advice: "I am a role model, absolutely," Cousin said. "I come from a place where there are not a lot of opportunities. People there, they don't ever really dream big because they don't think it ever really exists... And them seeing me make it, they believe it is possible. Those people grew up with me; they have seen the struggles; they have seen me fight and work my way to where I am now, so I absolutely believe I am a role model." DMC seems to be a much more matured player now. He showed up to camp for Team USA in terrific shape, and kept his antics to a minimum last season. He'll be a late-first round pick heading into this year's drafts.

  • Clippers officially waive Miroslav Raduljica
The Clippers officially waived C Miroslav Raduljica on Friday via the stretch provision.

Advice: The Clippers traded for Carlos Delfino and Miroslav Raduljica on Tuesday, and waived both guys on Friday to create cap space. The move will allow the organization to add four more guys to the roster (before this they could only add one) and they reportedly have their eyes on Ekpe Udoh. Whomever the Clippers decide to add, these will just be minimum-salary guys, and they shouldn't be expected to have any fantasy relevance.

  • Clippers officially waive Carlos Delfino
The Clippers officially waived Carlos Delfino on Friday via the stretch provision.

Advice: Delfino lasted three days with the Clippers organization before being waived. The move will give the Clippers an additional $3.5 million in cap space to sign players to minimum deals. Chris Douglas-Roberts is reportedly on the Clippers' radar, and he would add emergency depth to the wings. If Douglas-Roberts lands in LA, it will take an injury for him to become fantasy relevant.

  • Lucas Nogueira works out with Olajuwon
Lucas Nogueira worked out with Hakeem Olajuwon this week.

Advice: It's a popular move among big men and the young Brazilian does need some skills around the basket. He is very rangy and has the potential to be a big-time shot blocker, but he's still a long way from being a regular contributor. Nogueira isn't a worthwhile target in even keeper formats.

  • Derrick Rose to come off bench vs. Finland
Derrick Rose will come off the bench against Finland on Saturday in Team USA's FIBA opener.

Advice: Kyrie Irving will get the start and has earned it due to his outstanding showing this month. Rose said he's "feeling good right now" and we should get to see how he handles so many games in in short period of time. He's a huge risk in fantasy leagues.
  • Ian Mahinmi leaves Team France
Ian Mahinmi has left Team France due to a shoulder injury.

Advice: He appeared to suffer the injury in Thursday's practice session and the extent of the injury is not yet know. Mahinmi will back up Roy Hibbert again next season and could get more minutes with Luis Scola playing more power forward than center. He's still not worth drafting in most formats.
  • Jordan McRae headed to Australia next season
Jordan McRae signed with the Melbourne United in Australia.

Advice: He was tremendous at Las Vegas Summer League, scoring 21 points per game, and he probably would have competed for playing time with the 76ers. With McRae out of the picture, second-round pick K.J McDaniels is even more attractive in fantasy leagues.
  • Ty Lawson says the Nuggets will be defensive
Ty Lawson said the Nuggets will have more of a defensive mindset this upcoming season.

Advice: "I already know we can score, everybody knows we can score with the best of them," Lawson said. "But my mindset going into training camp is everybody buying into the defensive end." It took Lawson until June for his ankle to heal after missing 20 games last season. If the Nuggets do slow down, it could cost Lawson some stats. Still, the bigger concern is his health, making him a third-round target in most formats.

  • Anthony Davis loves playing for Team USA
Anthony Davis said on Thursday that he loves playing for Team USA basketball.

Advice: "Some guys look at it as they don't get paid, so you don't have to play or whatever," Davis said. "I love playing the game of basketball and any time I get a chance to represent my country, especially for all the servicemen and women who do so much for us, I think it's a great opportunity to show your appreciation." He has looked amazing in the exhibition games and is probably Team USA's most talented player. If you want him in your fantasy league, it'll cost you a top-three pick.
  • Miroslav Raduljica to be waived by Clippers
Miroslav Raduljica is expected to be waived by the Clippers.

Advice: He had two years left on his deal and the Clippers have no use for him now that they're armed with Spencer Hawes. Raduljica was really only traded so the Clippers could get Dudley's contract off their books. He could get picked up by another team, or may be going overseas.

  • Timofey Mozgov not forcing his way out of DEN
Timofey Mozgov said on Thursday that "all the talks about [a] trade to Cleveland are just rumors."

Advice: "My last season in Denver was good," he continued. "And to try and do something to leave the team wouldn't be smart." Mozgov also admitted that he does not want to join the Cavaliers to simply coast to a championship. "I would like to play with LeBron. But even though playing for a contender is cool, you got to understand that I want to be part of the team and not to just join a contender and ride the coattails, being a burden."

  • Monty Williams praises Anthony Davis' play
Pelicans head coach and Team USA assistant coach Monty Williams spoke glowingly of Anthony Davis' play this summer.

Advice: While he'll get to see Davis up close and personal for the entire 2014-15 season, Williams has gotten a sneak peek at Davis' play this summer as an assistant coach for Team USA. "You seldom say there's a better player on the floor," Williams said. "That's got to help him from a confidence standpoint." Davis has solidified himself as a Top 5 fantasy pick heading into 2014-15 drafts and it's getting to the point where you can draft him No. 2 overall without being mocked by fellow owners.
  • DeMarcus Cousins had no doubts on USA spot
DeMarcus Cousins said he had no doubts on making Team USA's World Cup of Basketball roster.

Advice: Cousins was thought to be on the bubble entering final roster cuts, but the 22-year-old confidently told reporters, "Y'all will see," on the eve of cuts. Turns out Cousins was right as Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski recently told reporters that Cousins had cemented himself as the backup center to Anthony Davis. Cousins seems to have turned over a new leaf this offseason, which can only mean great things for fantasy owners who have him pegged as a late-first round option heading into drafts.
  • Carlos Delfino (foot) may be waived by Clips
Carlos Delfino's surgically-repaired foot is not healing properly, and the Clippers may waive him via the "stretch provision."

Advice: Delfino would be a useful rotation player if healthy, but as things stand the Clippers can reduce his salary-cap amount over several years and thereby clear space for one or two minimum-salary free agents (Chris Douglas-Roberts and Ekpe Udoh have been mentioned as possible targets). Delfino has already had two surgeries on his foot and it sounds like his 2014-15 season is in jeopardy.

  • Derrick Rose struggles off Team USA's bench
Derrick Rose struggled throughout Team USA's exhibition on Tuesday, shooting 0-of-3 from the field and 3-of-6 at the FT line with three turnovers.

Advice: Rose came off the bench behind Kyrie Irving and he looked unusually passive, even finishing with a negative +/- rating in a game the U.S. won by 30 points. Some rust was to be expected from Rose, who has taken a few days off to rest his sore knees recently, and his game will be under the microscope throughout the World Cup which begins on Saturday.
    Tuesday, 2:19 pm
  • Anthony Davis leads Team USA to easy victory
Anthony Davis dominated during Team USA's win over Slovenia on Tuesday, racking up 18 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four blocks in under 20 minutes.

Advice: Davis has cemented himself as the cornerstone of Team USA's frontcourt, and his length gave the Slovenian team fits all game. The U.S. won by 30 points in their final exhibition before the FIBA World Cup begins in earnest -- they'll open the tournament with games vs. Finland on Saturday and Turkey on Sunday.
    Tuesday, 1:11 pm
  • Clippers get Miroslav Raduljica from Bucks
The Clippers acquired C Miroslav Raduljica from the Bucks on Tuesday.

Advice: Raduljica casts an imposing shadow at 7'1", 280 lbs., and he slots in as the Clips' third-string center behind DeAndre Jordan and Spencer Hawes. It would take a few injuries for him to emerge as a fantasy factor. Although he has three years remaining on his rookie contract, Miroslav's 2015-16 salary of $1.6 million is fully unguaranteed.
    Tuesday, 12:35 pm
  • Bucks trade Carlos Delfino to Clippers
Carlos Delfino was traded from the Bucks to the Clippers as part of Tuesday's three-player deal.

Advice: Delfino hasn't played since the 2012-13 season due to multiple foot surgeries, but he's tentatively expected to be ready for training camp. He'll give coach Doc Rivers another option at SG and SF if he stays healthy, but may have a hard time earning minutes in a wing rotation that includes J.J. Redick, Jamal Crawford, Matt Barnes and Reggie Bullock.
    Tuesday, 12:30 pm
  • Cavs still trying to acquire Timofey Mozgov
The Cavaliers are still trying to acquire Timofey Mozgov, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Advice: As the Cavs continue their search for a center to backup Anderson Varejao, their search is focused on the Nuggets' Mozgov and Kosta Koufos of the Memphis Grizzlies. Windhorst adds that the Cavs have been trying to acquire Mozgov for the last six to eight weeks while the Grizzlies are reluctant to part with Koufos due to Marc Gasol's injury last season. Mozgov wouldn't have much fantasy value in Cleveland, but a trade could open up more minutes for JaVale McGee and J.J. Hickson in Denver.
    Tuesday, 9:40 am
  • DeMarcus Cousins fully recovered from injury
DeMarcus Cousins stated during a recent interview that he is fully recovered from the minor knee injury that caused him to miss Team USA's exhibition game vs. Brazil.

Advice: The injury was never considered to be serious, and this report should remove any doubt about the big man's health. Cousins also said that he is honored to be representing his country, and making the US squad was a goal he had for this summer. Klay Thompson summed up what DeMarcus does for the US Team best, saying that: "DeMarcus does what he does best, and that's crashing the glass, taking up so much space in the paint and just wearing [opposing] bigs out." DMC had a fantastic season last year, and he'll be a safe late-first round option heading into this year's drafts.

  • FA Gustavo Ayon gets contract offer in China
Free agent Gustavo Ayon has received a contract offer from a team in China, but it's uncertain if he's drawn any interest in the NBA.

Advice: Ayon still sounds interested in the NBA, saying, "It is where I will play my best." He admitted that injuries have "hurt [his] game and career" over the past few years, however, and at the moment he's focused on staying healthy throughout the FIBA World Cup. His decision on where to play next season does not sound imminent.

  • Celtics asst. coach likes Marcus Smart's D
Celtics' assistant coach Walter McCarty has liked what he's seen from Marcus Smart so far, specifically his defense.

Advice: "[Smart is] a worker, and I think he's going to have a tremendous first season," said McCarty. "He can do a lot of things. We know he can defend, and we'll want him on the floor to get some of that stuff rub off on everybody else." Minutes lead to fantasy value, and while we'll need to see how Brad Stevens' rotations develop over training camp and preseason, it's possible Smart's defensive tenacity grants him some extended time on the floor. A trade of Rajon Rondo would greatly improve Smart's value, but with Rondo in town, Smart doesn't look to be a standard league play.
    Sunday, 8:02 am
  • Derrick Rose taking notes on Kyrie Irving
Derrick Rose has been taking notes on Kyrie Irving's game during his time with USA Basketball to prepare for when he has to compete against him this upcoming season.

Advice: "I mean, we're competitors," said Rose. "We look at each other's games to see what strengths are, weaknesses are, and of course you're going to use them during the season." The Cavs will be the Bulls primary rivals in the East this season, and Rose knows that while everything is friendly now, they'll be on opposing teams when the NBA season begins. The former-MVP will be a high-risk, high-reward target come draft day.
    Sunday, 7:44 am
  • Coach K says Rose feels confident w/ Team USA
Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Derrick Rose "feels very confident" about playing with Team USA.

Advice: "These guys want to play with him. That's part of getting back ... to be around a group of your peers," Krzyzewski said. Coach Tom Thibodeau is an assist with the team, so he's likely been a consultant for Coach K with Rose. Both coaches seem to have the belief that the extra playing time will only help Rose get back from only playing in 10 regular season games since April of 2012. He's certainly a candidate for MVP, but he's a really risky target for where we'd expect him to be selected in drafts.
    Saturday, 6:25 am
  • Anthony Davis headlines Team USA final roster
Anthony Davis, Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry and James Harden headlined the release of the 2014 Team USA Basketball roster on Friday.

Advice: Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, DeMar DeRozan, Kenneth Faried, and DeMarcus Cousins all made the squad, though Cousins' status appeared to be in doubt for much of the time. Rudy Gay and Andre Drummond also made the team, as did the ever-so-controversial Mason Plumlee. Damian Lillard, Chandler Parsons, Kyle Korver and Gordon Hayward were among the final cuts. Team USA will be the favorites in Spain, but this is undeniably one of the weaker teams we've seen in a while.

  • Rose plays a little, looks good in USA win
Derrick Rose played 14 minutes in Team USA's 112-86 win over Puerto Rico on Friday, scoring six points on 2-of-3 shooting with two rebounds and four assists.

Advice: Rose looked great but he isn't going to shake the questions about his health anytime soon, though this particular round of paranoia over his soreness is probably exactly that. The final roster is expected to be announced on Saturday.
    Friday, 6:12 pm
  • Official Team USA roster expected Saturday
The official 12-man Team USA roster is expected to be announced on Saturday.

Advice: There is a twist to this story as USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo and coach Mike Krzyzewski are reportedly still debating whether they will bring 12, 13, or 14 of their current 16 players to Spain. Bringing the additional players would give the pair an extra week to evaluate their guys, as the final 12-man roster does not need to be submitted until August 29. Stay tuned.
    Friday, 3:54 pm
  • Coach K thinks Derrick Rose is ready for FIBA
Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he is planning Derrick Rose to be healthy enough to play in the FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Advice: "I'm not going to do assumptions," Krzyzewski said of Rose. "I think he's ready. I'm thinking about him playing and being there [in Spain]." Rose is just dealing with general body soreness and missed two exhibitions for Team USA, so all eyes will be on him for tonight's match vs. Puerto Rico. His torn meniscus injury from last season isn't quite as severe as his ACL tear from 2012, but he is certainly not all the way back. He'll be a risky pick in fantasy leagues.
    Friday, 6:21 am
  • D-Rose 'feeling good' after practice on Thurs
Derrick Rose said he was "feeling good" after Team USA practice on Thursday.

Advice: "I'm feeling good. I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow & see how it goes," Rose said. "Just trying to stay positive til then." He sat out Team USA's exhibition game against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday citing knee soreness. The national team has been taking every precaution with Rose as he looks to return to the NBA after missing nearly all of the past two seasons.
    Thursday, 1:09 pm
  • Brook Lopez sheds 15 pounds for next season
Brook Lopez said he has slimmed down to 275 pounds as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Advice: "I'm at my playing weight," Lopez said. "I'm back to the weight that's normal for me. Last I checked, I was just under 275 [pounds]." Lopez was on his way to a solid fantasy season last year, averaging 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 56.3 percent shooting from the field. Unfortunately he was lost for the entire season after only 17 games played. If he can stay healthy, Lopez will be a true fantasy difference maker at the center position.
    Thursday, 11:50 am
  • Derrick Rose set to practice Thursday
Derrick Rose will practice with Team USA on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday's exhibition game against the Dominican Republic due to fatigue.

Advice: Rose's name was listed on Team Blue, while Kyrie Irving will play on Team White alongside the other Team USA starters. Team USA will have to play nine games in 16 days at the upcoming World Cup of Basketball, so there is a chance that Rose is left off the roster if the coaching staff decides to opt for a more reliable option. The 25-year-old has as much potential as any player entering 2014-15 fantasy drafts, but owners need to be aware of the huge risk that comes along with that upside.
    Thursday, 9:28 am
  • Derrick Rose plans to play vs Puerto Rico
Derrick Rose said he will play in Team USA's exhibition game against Puerto Rico on Friday.

Advice: Rose sat out Wednesday's exhibition against the Dominican Republican due to what he called body fatigue, but the Bulls' star said he'll be ready to go on Friday. "Just trying to protect myself, just knowing that this is a long, long schedule and this is the most basketball I'll be playing in two years," Rose said. "So I'm just going in, trying to gear up, making sure that I'm healthy." His involvement in Thursday's practice will be more telling in terms of his availability for Friday, but we'll have to take him at his word for now.
    Thursday, 6:13 am
  • Derrick Rose expected to practice on Thursday
Coach Tom Thibodeau said he expects Derrick Rose (soreness) to practice on Thursday and play on Friday vs. Puerto Rico.

Advice: He went through shootaround on Wednesday, but the team held him out of action in the game. During NBATV's Wednesday broadcast, Coach Thibs did mention he may have sat Rose out because he wanted to get a look at some players, so that does make sense. If Rose does sit out of practice on Thursday, that could be a red flag. Stay tuned.
    Wednesday, 6:09 pm
  • Coach K: Davis to score more with Team USA
Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Anthony Davis will have more opportunities to score with Team USA.

Advice: With the team missing Paul George (leg) and Kevin Durant, Davis may be the team's best weapon, and may be the most important guy on the team with its lack of frontcourt depth. He's a stud already as he heads into his third season and you can make a case for him as the No. 2 player in dynasty fantasy formats.
    Tuesday, 6:14 pm
  • DeMarcus Cousins (knee) 50-50 for Wednesday
DeMarcus Cousins (knee) practiced fully on Tuesday, but he said he's "50-50" to play vs. the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Advice: Cousins' knee is structurally healthy but Wednesday's game is a friendly exhibition, so caution may keep him on the sidelines. If he does sit out, Team USA will have lean even more on big men Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Mason Plumlee and Kenneth Faried.
