  • MIN picks up team option on Tyus Jones
The Timberwolves have picked up their team option on Tyus Jones.

Advice: Recent reports indicate that the Timberwolves are shopping Jones, which makes sense given Minnesota's wealth of options at the point guard position. He's not worth drafting anywhere. Yesterday, 3:47 pm
  • MIN picks up team option on Zach LaVine
The Timberwolves have exercised their fourth-year team option on Zach LaVine.

Advice: Andrew Wiggins' fourth year option was also picked up, so the Bounce Bros get at least one more year together. LaVine was impressive after the All-Star break last season, compiling averages of 16.4 points, 2.8 assists, 2.4 triples and 1.2 steals per contest on 48.0 percent shooting, so he makes sense as a mid-round target on draft day. Yesterday, 3:42 pm
  • Damian Lillard wants to be the 2017 MVP
Damian Lillard said that his personal goal for the 2016-17 season is to take home the MVP trophy.

Advice: It could be tough for Lillard to take that award this season with the type of year we're expecting from James Harden and Russell Westbrook, but he has seen across-the-board statistical improvement each year he's been in the league, so at the very least he should be in the discussion. Thrillard makes for a fine late-first, early-second round target in any setting. Yesterday, 2:02 pm
  • Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) practices in full Sun
Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) was a full participant during Sunday's practice.

Advice: He should be just fine for opening night, but remains a borderline late-round target in standard leagues due to his issues with turnovers and shooting percentages. He is, however, a much more attractive target in points settings. Yesterday, 11:43 am
  • Devin Harris (foot) questionable for opener
Devin Harris re-injured his left foot during Friday's preseason finale in Denver, and Rick Carlisle said that he'll be "questionable at best" for Wednesday's season opener against the Pacers.

Advice: While Harris isn't worth drafting in any setting, this is just another reminder that the guys in front of Seth Curry (Deron Williams, J.J. Barea, Harris) seem to be perpetually injured. While Curry might not get off to a quick start, he could eventually be forced into heavy minutes once the guys in front of him go down with their inevitable injuries. Gambling on Curry towards the last few rounds makes sense. Yesterday, 11:21 am
  • J.J. Barea (elbow) targeting opening night
J.J. Barea (left elbow) participated in some non-contact work during Sunday's practice, and he's hopeful that he'll be good to go by opening night.

Advice: The Mavs are currently listing Barea as day-to-day, so for now we'll be considering him questionable for opening night. Barea has had a tough time staying on the court over the years, so he's not worth drafting almost anywhere. As a side note, Rick Carlisle said that if Barea can't give it a go on Wednesday, Seth Curry will be Dallas' backup point guard. Yesterday, 11:14 am
  • Jeremy Lin excited to be a leader in Brooklyn
Jeremy Lin said that he's "extremely excited" for the opportunity to be a leader on the Nets.

Advice: In addition to being Brooklyn's unquestioned starting point guard, he's going to be one of the Nets' primary weapons on offense, so he could be in a for a career-year running in Kenny Atkinson's uptempo offense. Lin had a very nice preseason with averages of 17.2 points, 5.6 assists, 2.0 triples and 1.4 steals per game on a ridiculous 61.9 percent shooting, so it looks like the work Lin put in on improving as a shooter this summer have paid off. He'll be worth a mid-round pick on draft day. Yesterday, 11:07 am
  • Brett Brown won't reveal his starting PG
76ers coach Brett Brown has not decided on a starting point guard for the season opener.

Advice: Jerryd Bayless (wrist) will be out for at least a couple weeks, so the decision will come down to Sergio Rodriguez and T.J. McConnell. Neither player really separated themselves during the preseason, but Rodriguez has more upside and is the better flier late in drafts. Yesterday, 10:14 am
  • Raptors pick up Delon Wright's option
The Raptors have picked up Delon Wright's (shoulder) third-year option.

Advice: The PG isn't expected to be ready until at least Christmas, so Fred VanVleet will be the third-string PG until Wright is healthy. Yesterday, 8:37 am
  • Briante Weber to join Miami's D-League team?
Briante Weber is expected to join the Heat's D-League affiliate if he clears waivers.

Advice: Weber is a solid defender and racked up 19 steals during the preseason, but he needs to develop on the offensive end. We'll let you know where he ends up. Yesterday, 8:18 am

  • Pat Beverley (knee) re-evaluated in 3 weeks
Patrick Beverley (knee) will be re-evaluated in three weeks following his Tuesday surgery.

Advice: He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to the procedure. Based on that timetable following the procedure, Beverley will miss between 14-21 games. It'll be James Harden and his preseason-high 10.7 assists per game running the point with Eric Gordon also getting a major bump. Saturday, 5:43 pm
  • Report: Wolves still shopping PG Tyus Jones
The Timberwolves remain "engaged in trade talks on Tyus Jones," sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

Advice: The Sixers are just one of the teams in the hunt, but a deal between the two teams would make sense given Philadelphia needs more at point guard and Minnesota currently has four of them on the roster. With the Timberwolves deciding to keep veteran John Lucas III, a Jones trade seems likely if not definite sooner rather than later. Saturday, 1:20 pm
  • Report: Beverley (knee surgery) out 4-6 weeks
Patrick Beverley (left knee surgery) is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks, a source told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

Advice: Beverley is expected to undergo the procedure on Tuesday. This timetable aligns much more with what Mike D'Antoni had previously said regarding his expectation that Beverley would miss about 20 games, so it sounds like the three-week timetable to return that was previously reported was a bit optimistic. In Beverley's absence, Eric Gordon is expected to get the majority of minutes alongside James Harden, but we should see some of Pablo Prigioni and possibly K.J. McDaniels, as well. Saturday, 1:12 pm
  • Alec Burks (knee, ankle) still not practicing
Alec Burks (knee and ankle surgeries) is still not practicing with the team.

Advice: Burks is out indefinitely and not much of a fantasy consideration given all of Utah's depth. It's not yet clear when he may be able to return to the court. Saturday, 12:14 pm
    Player Note
    Alec Burks Uta - PG,SG
  • Heat waive Briante Weber on Saturday morning
    Heat waive G Briante Weber.

Advice: Weber had a chance of making the team after spending time with Miami last season, but he was outplayed by Rodney McGruder. He's once again a possibility to join the Heat's D-League team. Saturday, 11:22 am

  • Kay Felder enters the concussion protocol
Kay Felder has entered the league's concussion protocol.

Advice: This puts his status for opening night in question and it could leave the Cavs with just one point guard in Kyrie Irving. If Felder can't go, we should see Iman Shumpert and possibly Jordan McRae at the one, but it's still too tough to trust them in standard leagues. LeBron James will have additional responsibilities handling the ball. Saturday, 10:59 am
  • Reggie Jackson hoping to beat his timetable
Reggie Jackson (knee, thumb) is hoping to beat the 6-8 week timetable he was given.

Advice: He said he wants to be back on the court four weeks after the procedure date (Oct. 10), so that would have him returning to the practice court in early November. He would still need a couple weeks of practice after that, so he'd still be looking at about 14-18 games missed if he's right about his progress. Players are usually a little too optimistic about return dates, so just take this with a grain of salt. Ish Smith is worth owning everywhere until R-Jax returns. Saturday, 9:49 am
  • Brandon Knight gets 27 minutes
Brandon Knight played 27 minutes on Friday with 14 points, two rebounds, five assists and one 3-pointer.

Advice: This was a dress rehearsal for the Suns, so the 27 minutes seem like a fair expectation for Knight. Coach Earl Watson looks like he wants to get Leandro Barbosa in the mix and gave him 16 minutes tonight, so that would eliminate a three-guard rotation. While Knight's value should still be solid in the second unit, his upside is capped. That said, he makes sense in the 75-100 window of a standard draft. Friday, 10:05 pm
  • Pat Beverley (knee scope) out 3 weeks
Patrick Beverley (knee) will undergo a minor surgical scope on his left knee early next week.

Advice: He is expected to miss three weeks, which is a slightly better prognosis than what coach Mike D'Antoni said with Beverley possibly missing 20 games. The Rockets are going to lean more on Eric Gordon and James Harden to take on most of their guard minutes while Pablo Prigioni, K.J. McDaniels and Tyler Ennis could fill in the gaps. Friday, 9:34 pm
  • Spanish Chocolate starts, scores 13
Sergio Rodriguez scored 13 points with three rebounds, four assists and two 3-pointers in 26 minutes during his start on Friday.

Advice: T.J. McConnell started the second half, so this position battle is still unclear. Jerryd Bayless (wrist) is going to miss the start of the season and it's still possible he needs surgery. Both Rodriguez and McConnell should be looking at a split of the minutes. Spanish Chocolate has the higher upside, so he's the better pick in deep leagues. Friday, 9:10 pm
  • Pat Beverley expected to miss 20 games
Coach Mike D'Antoni said Pat Beverley (knee) is expected to miss about 20 games.

Advice: The timetable is about the same whether he waits it out or has surgery, so we still don't know the treatment plan. Whatever the case, if he misses 20 games, that puts his target date at Dec. 5 against the Celtics -- he could miss fewer than that, though. James Harden is going to get the starting job and play massive minutes. After that, it looks like Tyler Ennis is next in line. Eric Gordon is also locked in for minutes at SG with Harden at the point. Friday, 7:51 pm
  • Zach LaVine scores 15 points vs. CHA
Zach LaVine scored 15 points against the Hornets on Friday, adding five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one 3-pointer.

Advice: He was hobbling around in both halves, but didn't ask out and didn't appear to be in pain. For now, we'll assume LaVine was just fine because there was no reason to play him in the preseason. He's going to be the trigger man for the Wolves and could flirt with 20 points per game. Friday, 7:35 pm
  • Mudiay and Arthur out for Friday night
Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle), Gary Harris (groin) and Darrell Arthur (knee) will not play against the Mavs on Friday.

Advice: He only had a small chance to play on Thursday, but he's still not in jeopardy of missing the opener. For tonight, we'll get a longer look at Jamal Murray, who has played well at the point in his last two. Mudiay is still only a late-round pick in standard leagues and a mid-round guy in points formats. Friday, 4:30 pm
  • Sergio, Hendo, Cov, Saric & Process starting
Sergio Rodriguez, Gerald Henderson, Robert Covington, Dario Saric and Joel Embiid will start on Friday.

Advice: This seems like a tune up for the 76ers and maybe it means Rodriguez starts the opener. For what it's worth, this group was together in their scrimmage on Thursday. There still isn't enough upside to draft Rodriguez in most leagues. Friday, 3:17 pm
  • Jeremy Lin scores 24 to cap awesome preseason
Jeremy Lin was busy again on Thursday, scoring 24 points with 10 assists, two steals, eight turnovers and two 3-pointers.

Advice: Is Linsanity back? One interesting item from the preseason is coach Kenny Atkinson upping his team's pace to a head-turning 105.7 this preseason. While preseason pace numbers are inflated, that's still a massive bump from last year. Lin is going to be one of the focal points of the offense as he helps set up Brook Lopez. He was also outstanding in the preseason, scoring 17.2 points per game on a magnificent 77.3 true shooting percentage. The new role and system have moved him back into the mix as a mid-round pick. Thursday, 8:01 pm
  • Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) has chance to play
Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) has a small chance to play on Friday.

Advice: He sprained his ankle on Oct. 14 and hasn't played since. Mudiay not being ruled out bodes well for his chances to play in the opener. If he's out, Jamal Murray will get another chance to prove he's capable of playing some point guard. Murray has been success in his last two, which bodes well for his value in keeper leagues. Thursday, 4:12 pm
  • Briante Weber will start Thursday vs. CHA
Briante Weber will be in the starting lineup for Thursday's preseason game against the Hornets, with Goran Dragic (rest) unavailable.

Advice: Dion Waiters, Wayne Ellington, Derrick Williams and Hassan Whiteside (personal) will join Weber in the starting unit for tonight's game. Weber is a solid defender, but he won't see enough minutes this season while the team is at full strength to make a difference in fantasy hoops. It's worth pointing out that this will be Williams' fifth consecutive start at power forward, so it looks like he'll be starting for Miami on opening night. Thursday, 3:28 pm

  • J.J. Barea (elbow) questionable for opener
Rick Carlisle would not commit to J.J. Barea (left elbow) being ready for the regular-season opener.

Advice: "I don’t know that he’s definitely going to be ready for Indiana," said Carilsle. "Just because he’s doing well doesn’t mean anything is set in terms of him being available at a certain time." If Barea begins the year on the sidelines, that will open up some more minutes for Seth Curry. Barea isn't worth drafting almost anywhere, but Curry is a very attractive late-round target with the injury prone guys ahead of him. Thursday, 1:10 pm
  • Barea (elbow), Acy (foot) out Friday vs. DEN
J.J. Barea (elbow) and Quincy Acy (foot) have been ruled out for Friday's preseason finale against the Nuggets.

Advice: Neither player is dealing with a significant injury, but there's no reason to risk a setback during a meaningless game. Barea will be in the rotation, but he's not going to get enough minutes to matter in most settings this season. Acy is a complete non-factor in fantasy hoops. Thursday, 11:18 am
  • Damian Lillard scores 27 points in 28 minutes
Damian Lillard lit up the Jazz for 27 points in 28 minutes on Wednesday, finishing 11-of-16 from the field with four 3-pointers.

Advice: Lillard added four boards, two assists and one block with just one turnover, and his offensive fireworks were a nice sight after Sunday's 1-of-10 shooting. He's a popular target at the turn of the first and second rounds in standard leagues. Wednesday, 8:36 pm
  • 76ers, Pelicans interested in PG Tyus Jones
The 76ers and Pelicans are among "several teams" showing interest in a trade for Wolves' PG Tyus Jones, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

Advice: Jones would likely be a backup PG no matter where he lands, though anything can happen in Philly's rotation. A trade can only improve his value and his whereabouts are at least worth monitoring in deep leagues. Wednesday, 4:09 pm
  • Sergio, Hendo, Cov, Saric & Process starting?
Sergio Rodriguez, Gerald Henderson, Robert Covington, Dario Saric and Joel Embiid were playing together on a scrimmage.

Advice: It's a toss up for Rodriguez or T.J. McConnell to start in the opener. It looks like Jerryd Bayless (wrist) is not going to be ready for the opener, which means there should be a lot of minutes available. Wednesday, 4:07 pm
  • J.J. Barea (elbow) will not play on Wednesday
J.J. Barea (hyperextended elbow) will not play on Wednesday.

Advice: With the Mavs going with a dress rehearsal tonight, there should be a nice amount of minutes for Seth Curry off the bench. Barea will be in the rotation and should get minutes in the teens while the Mavs are healthy. Wednesday, 4:03 pm
  • Patrick Beverley out through preseason
Patrick Beverley (knee) will not play in the preseason.

Advice: He may need surgery on his knee and could miss time in the regular season regardless of the treatment plan. There's always a lot of buzz around a Mike D'Antoni point guard, but it turns out that guy may be James Harden. With Beverley out, Eric Gordon benefits the most. Wednesday, 11:31 am
  • Patrick Beverley may need surgery on knee
Patrick Beverley may need surgery on his left knee according to ESPN.

Advice: Wow. He's missed the last four games with "knee irritation," and Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni hinted last week that he's not expecting him to be ready for the regular season. Beverley will undergo further evaluations this week before a final determination is made, but this takes him off the standard-league radar until we know more. Eric Gordon gets a bump with this news and should start next to James Harden. Tuesday, 8:25 pm
  • Mudiay, Harris, Arthur, Chandler out Tuesday
Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle), Gary Harris (groin), Darrell Arthur (knee) and Wilson Chandler (rest) have all been ruled out for Tuesday's preseason game against the Thunder.

Advice: This will be Mudiay's second straight game on the shelf with the ankle injury, but he maintains that the injury is not serious, so this is probably just the Denver coaching staff exercising extreme caution with the regular season just a week away. Jamal Murray should get the bulk of the minutes tonight sans Harris and Mudiay, with Malik Beasley also seeing some increased opportunity. Tuesday, 3:52 pm
  • Patrick Beverley likely to miss season opener
Patrick Beverley (sore knee) is likely to miss the season opener.

Advice: Beverley is trying to work his way back from irritation in his left knee, and head coach Mike D'Antoni isn't counting on him for the opener. "We'll know more by the end of the week," D'Antoni said. "I'm not counting on [Beverley returning by the season opener]. Can't count on that." Beverley could lose his starting SG job to Eric Gordon by the time he returns, and isn't much more than a late-round pick in standard fantasy leagues. Tuesday, 10:16 am
  • Lin, Sean, RHJ, Hamilton and Lopez starting
Jeremy Lin, Sean Kilpatrick, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Justin Hamilton and Brook Lopez will start vs. the Celtics on Monday according to Nets PR.

Advice: This means that Randy Foye and Trevor Booker will head to the bench Monday. Coach Atkinson has made it clear that he hasn't decided on a starting lineup for opening night, but it seems like the only locks to start are Lin, RHJ and Lopez. Monday, 3:36 pm
  • Kay Felder has won the backup PG role
Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue confirmed that Kay Felder has won the backup point guard role.

Advice: "Right now we'll say he's going to be our backup point guard for right now," Lue said. However, Lue also added that the plan for running the offense when Kyrie Irving is out is to "do it by committee," meaning LeBron James and Iman Shumpert will handle the ball as well. Felder has looked great in the preseason and has scored 14 or more points in three out of five games, but his value will be limited while Irving is healthy. Oct 17, 7:33 am
  • Rubio, LaVine, Wiggins, Dieng, Towns resting
Ricky Rubio, Zach LaVine, Andrew Wiggins, Gorgui Dieng and Karl-Anthony Towns will all be rested for Sunday's preseason game against the Thunder.

Advice: It's the second night of a back-to-back set during the preseason, meaning there was no way any of these guys were going to take the floor tonight, not even for Tom Thibodeau. Kris Dunn is going to be very busy. Oct 16, 3:55 pm
  • Burks (knee, ankle) goes through agility work
Alec Burks (knee and ankle surgeries) "went hard" during an after practice agility work session on Sunday, according to Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Advice: Burks still hasn't been able to practice with the team, or take any contact, so his status for opening night is very much in jeopardy. Utah has a ton of depth at the guard positions this year, so it's going to be tough for Burks to make a difference in fantasy hoops. Oct 16, 12:16 pm
    Player Note
    Alec Burks Uta - PG,SG
  • Brown: Sergio tried to run too many plays
Brett Brown said that Sergio Rodriguez was running too many plays vs. the Pistons on Saturday instead of just going out there and playing.

Advice: "He's elusive in open court," Brown said. "He's got a feel. He's slippery with his handle and his vision. So I want him to play more like he's always played." Rodriguez got the start at PG, but struggled with three points on 1-for-5 shooting with seven dimes, one rebound, one steal, and three turnovers. Jerryd Bayless (wrist) could be looking at an extended absence, so Rodriguez could be sneaky pickup in deeper leagues for owners targeting assists. Oct 16, 10:13 am
  • Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) will not play Sunday
Emmanuel Mudiay (right ankle sprain) will not play on Sunday vs. the Blazers.

Advice: The good news is that Mudiay, who missed 14 games with a right ankle sprain last season, believes the injury is "minor." Although the point guard isn't certain on his exact timeline to return, it does not sound as if his regular season status is in any jeopardy at this juncture. For now, Mudiay's absence will open up more run for veteran Jameer Nelson and rookie Jamal Murray. Oct 15, 1:02 pm
  • Brandon Knight gets 25 minutes
Brandon Knight (knee) returned to action and made his first start of the preseason on Friday, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes.

Advice: Devin Booker (ankle) did not play in this game and coach Earl Watson decided to go back to his old backcourt starters from last year. Knight is going to come off the bench this year, which isn't a bad thing for a guy who can score and dish to his young teammates. Knight is still a decent target in the later middle rounds. Oct 14, 9:46 pm
  • Emmanuel Mudiay suffers right ankle sprain
Emmanuel Mudiay suffered a right ankle sprain on Friday and will not return.

Advice: The good news is coach Mike Malone said it doesn't look serious. This is the same right ankle he sprained last year and caused him to miss 14 games. Mudiay has been working extremely hard this offseason, but nothing has come of it as far as production goes. If he's going to miss time, we'll see more Jameer Nelson and Jamal Murray at the point. Oct 14, 7:45 pm
  • Kay Felder scores 14 with seven dimes
Kay Felder scored 14 points with three rebounds, seven assists and two 3-pointers in 28 minutes against the Bulls on Friday.

Advice: The Cavs still haven't figured out their backup point guard spot, which could be a big issue for them given Kyrie Irving's injury history. Felder is a joy to watch for his top-notch athleticism and we could see him make a splash at some point this year. Although, that would change if the Cavs sign someone like Mario Chalmers (Achilles). Oct 14, 7:27 pm
  • Brandon Knight will play; Alex Len will not
Brandon Knight (knee) will play against the Mavs on Friday.

Advice: His left knee tendinitis is not a concern and he should be good to go. Knight will come off the bench and should have a big-time usage rate and good assist numbers. Oct 14, 6:34 pm
  • Kay, McRae, Liggins, Holmes & Cory J starting
Kay Felder, Jordan McRae, DeAndre Liggins, Cory Jefferson and Jonathan Holmes will start against the Bulls on Friday.

Advice: Hey, at least there should be a whole lot of Felder and McRae. Oct 14, 4:21 pm
  • Brandon Knight questionable for Friday
Brandon Knight (knee) is questionable to play against the Mavs on Friday.

Advice: He missed Wednesday due to some left knee tendinitis. Knight hasn't had any noteworthy knee issues since 2013 and that was to his right knee. The fact that he's questionable for a preseason game is strong enough evidence that this isn't serious. Oct 14, 2:14 pm
  • Sergio Rodriguez to start at PG Saturday
Sergio Rodriguez will start at point guard on Saturday vs. the Pistons.

Advice: T.J. McConnell will move to the bench. Jerryd Bayless (wrist) has no timetable to return and his injury could be serious, so the 76ers want to see how Rodriguez looks in the first unit. Through five preseason games he's averaging 5.6 points, 5.6 assists, 2.2 rebounds, 1.0 3-pointer, 1.0 steal and 3.0 turnovers per game. Oct 14, 10:38 am
  • Patrick Beverley could miss a week or two
Patrick Beverley (sore knee) could miss a week or two according to coach Mike D'Antoni.

Advice: The season starts in less than two weeks, so this report means that Beverley's status for the opener is up in the air. Beverley was expected to start next to Harden this season, but Eric Gordon has looked great in the preseason and could steal the job. Beverley is still not practicing with the team. Oct 14, 10:19 am
  • Patrick Beverley (sore knee) out Saturday
Patrick Beverley (sore knee) will not play on Saturday vs. Memphis.

Advice: He still isn't practicing and the Rockets haven't provided a timetable. A report on Thursday indicated that Beverley is "feeling better," but we won't have any more clarity for a couple more days. Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) is doubtful, so James Harden and Eric Gordon could be busy. Oct 14, 9:53 am
