  • Cuban: Harrison Barnes isn't our No. 1 option
Mark Cuban said that he does not expect Harrison Barnes to be the top option in Dallas.

Advice: Considering the Mavs just gave Barnes nearly $100M, we're not sure this is exactly what fans wanted to hear. "Now are we asking him to come in and be our leading scorer day one? No," Cuban said. "I think we'll have a great balance of scoring attack. There are going to be days he scores four points and games when he scores 25 points. As long as we're getting the defensive effort." Given how horrific Barnes looked during the preseason, we're not sure Cuban is going to get what he's asking for. And that usually doesn't end up well. Yesterday, 3:23 pm
  • Report: Greg Monroe could opt-in next year
The Bucks are "preparing for the possibility" that Greg Monroe opts into his deal for the 2017-18 season, sources told ESPN's Zach Lowe.

Advice: You could literally "prepare for the possibility" of anything, so we're not reading too far into this one. Besides, Monroe could be traded before we even reach that juncture. Yesterday, 3:08 pm
  • Pelicans 'thrilled' with Terrence Jones
The Pelicans have been "thrilled" with Terrence Jones in the preseason.

Advice: In particular, New Orleans has been impressed by his ability to facilitate. After a slowish start, Jones really came on toward the end of the preseason and has firmly reestablished himself as a huge fantasy sleeper just ahead of the season. So long as he can stay healthy—and that's not a given whatsoever with this particular player—Jones should provide a very nice return on investment for owners willing to take the gamble. Yesterday, 2:44 pm
  • Aron Baynes (nose) to see doctor on Sunday
Aron Baynes (nose) is expected to see a doctor on Sunday.

Advice: After undergoing surgery earlier this week, Baynes will check in with the doctor to see if he can be cleared for non-contact work. The hope is that he'll be cleared to practice in full on Tuesday and be ready for Wednesday's season opener. Yesterday, 2:18 pm
  • Timofey Mozgov returns to practice Saturday
Timofey Mozgov (tailbone) returned to practice on Saturday.

Advice: Mozgov was already declared ready for the season opener, but it's nice to see him back on the practice floor before the year begins. Yesterday, 2:10 pm
  • Alec Burks (knee, ankle) still not practicing
Alec Burks (knee and ankle surgeries) is still not practicing with the team.

Advice: Burks is out indefinitely and not much of a fantasy consideration given all of Utah's depth. It's not yet clear when he may be able to return to the court. Yesterday, 12:14 pm
  • Gordon Hayward (finger) not practicing yet
Gordon Hayward (left ring finger) is not yet practicing with the team.

Advice: We are just providing this update in order to make it clear that Hayward is still in the early stages of his recovery. The star swingman is targeting a return in mid-to-late November. Yesterday, 12:13 pm
  • Bucks waive Orlando Johnson at final cuts
    Bucks waive G Orlando Johnson.

Advice: Johnson was never expected to make the final roster. Yesterday, 12:05 pm
  • Jazz waive G/F Chris Johnson at final cuts
    Jazz waive G/F Chris Johnson.

Advice: Johnson was expected to be waived two months ago, but he made it all the way up until final cuts before his fate was sealed. Jeff Withey will remain on Utah's roster as a result. Yesterday, 12:01 pm
  • Derrick Favors (L knee) still not practicing
Derrick Favors (left knee, IT band syndrome) did not practice again on Saturday.

Advice: The Jazz and fantasy owners can continue to hold out hope that he'll be ready for the regular season opener, but the reality is as follows: Favors hasn't been on the floor in nearly three weeks, we've gotten very little real information when it comes to his progression and nobody seems to know exactly what the problem is. At this point, we have no choice but to bump him down our draft boards while moving up Trey Lyles a few ticks in the process. Favors should be considered questionable at best for opening night and the potential exists for him to miss multiple regular season contests. Yesterday, 11:44 am
  • Kyrie Irving (calf) resumes regular routine
Kyrie Irving (calf) has returned to a full practice.

Advice: Irving revealed that the original soreness was due to the after-effect of him "needling" his calf (read: acupuncture) prior to game action. The good news is that he's expected to be absolutely fine and is in no danger of missing any regular season time. With Kay Felder in the league's concussion protocol, Irving should be looking at sizable minutes right out of the gate. Yesterday, 11:40 am
    New Player Note

  • Kay Felder enters the concussion protocol
Kay Felder has entered the league's concussion protocol.

Advice: This puts his status for opening night in question and it could leave the Cavs with just one point guard in Kyrie Irving. If Felder can't go, we should see Iman Shumpert and possibly Jordan McRae at the one, but it's still too tough to trust them in standard leagues. LeBron James will have additional responsibilities handling the ball. Yesterday, 10:59 am
  • Reggie Jackson hoping to beat his timetable
Reggie Jackson (knee, thumb) is hoping to beat the 6-8 week timetable he was given.

Advice: He said he wants to be back on the court four weeks after the procedure date (Oct. 10), so that would have him returning to the practice court in early November. He would still need a couple weeks of practice after that, so he'd still be looking at about 14-18 games missed if he's right about his progress. Players are usually a little too optimistic about return dates, so just take this with a grain of salt. Ish Smith is worth owning everywhere until R-Jax returns. Yesterday, 9:49 am
  • Blazers waive Greg Stiemsma
The Blazers will waive Greg Stiemsma.

Advice: Rookie Tim Quarterman has won the 15th roster spot in Portland. Grant Jerrett will also be waived by the Blazers. Yesterday, 6:16 am
  • Stotts confirms Harkless will start at SF
Coach Terry Stotts confirmed Moe Harkless will start on opening night.

Advice: It seemed obvious with the cohesion of the first unit in the preseason and how it performed last year. Plus, Evan Turner makes more sense off the bench and the same can be said for Allen Crabbe. Still, Harkless is only a flier in 14-team leagues for now. Friday, 10:52 pm
  • Evan Turner misses all eight FGAs
Evan Turner missed all eight shots from the field and made 1-of-2 from the line for one point on Friday, adding two rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Advice: The Warriors dared him to shoot jumpers and it obviously didn't work for Turner. ET's positional flexibility makes him an ideal bench guy to play three or even four positions for coach Terry Stotts. He's really just a three-category guy, so standard league owners should be looking elsewhere. Friday, 10:35 pm
    Player Note

  • Meyers Leonard returns on Friday
Meyers Leonard scored 12 points in 16 minutes on Friday, adding one rebound and two 3-pointers.

Advice: He played most of his minutes at center and came off the bench behind Noah Vonleh. Leonard's fantasy outlook doesn't bring much excitement right now. Friday, 10:32 pm
  • Moe Harkless the favorite to start?
Moe Harkless scored five points with four rebounds, two assists and one 3-pointer in 20 minutes on Friday.

Advice: Even though he didn't play well, it looks like Harkless is the heavy favorite to start at small forward. That usually sounds promising, but coach Terry Stotts plays the matchups like nobody else and Harkless won't be heavily involved in the offense. He's not quite worthy of taking in standard drafts. Friday, 10:30 pm
  • Ivica Zubac quiet in start
Ivica Zubac started on Friday with four points, two rebounds and one steal in 10 minutes.

Advice: No Zublocks? Weak. The Croatian big man is going to take some time to develop, but he should get run later in the season as the Lakers tank to protect a potential top-three pick. Just throw Zubac on your watch list for deep leagues. Friday, 10:24 pm
  • Alex Len gets 16 points
Alex Len scored 16 points in 24 minutes on Friday with nine rebounds, one steal and two blocks in 24 minutes.

Advice: He got all he could eat in the second unit with a 33.6 usage rate tonight. Len continues to struggle around the basket, which really makes it tough to draft him. Maybe he can improve this year, but most owners can take a wait-and-see approach. Friday, 10:20 pm
    Player Note

  • Eric Bledsoe scores nine
Eric Bledsoe scored nine points with eight rebounds, four assists, one steal and five turnovers on Friday night.

Advice: His assist rate did take a bit of a hit with his minutes next to Devin Booker, but it's not a strong enough correlation to draw any conclusions. Even if the rate does drop, Bledsoe lost weight and the Suns are absolutely flying in pace of play to negate that possible lost. The bottom line is Bledsoe's biggest risk remains his injury history and his prospective owners can still pounce in the early rounds. Friday, 10:10 pm

  • Brandon Knight gets 27 minutes
Brandon Knight played 27 minutes on Friday with 14 points, two rebounds, five assists and one 3-pointer.

Advice: This was a dress rehearsal for the Suns, so the 27 minutes seem like a fair expectation for Knight. Coach Earl Watson looks like he wants to get Leandro Barbosa in the mix and gave him 16 minutes tonight, so that would eliminate a three-guard rotation. While Knight's value should still be solid in the second unit, his upside is capped. That said, he makes sense in the 75-100 window of a standard draft. Friday, 10:05 pm

  • Kenneth Faried to come off the bench
Kenneth Faried will come off the bench this regular season.

Advice: He had a good game on Friday, scoring 10 points with nine rebounds, one assist and one steal in 21 minutes. With Nikola Jokic set to play minutes at both big spots and coach Mike Malone loving to go small, Faried's playing time may only be hanging in the low 20s. He's also a trade candidate given Denver's depth -- that might be a good thing. If you draft Faried late, make sure your expectations are somewhat low. Friday, 9:56 pm
    Player Note

  • Harrison Barnes' bad preseason finally ends
Harrison Barnes did not do much on Friday, scoring eight points with three rebounds and one steal in 26 minutes.

Advice: It was a preseason to forget for Harry B. The Mavs are obviously committed to him with his $94 million deal, so he has a leash as long as Texas as the starting small forward. Barnes is being put into a new role and it's really tough to invest anything more than a late-round pick on him based on how awful he looked this month. Friday, 9:48 pm
  • Kawhi Leonard has another strong preseason
Kawhi Leonard scored 15 points with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and two 3-pointers in 18 minutes on Friday.

Advice: That's a wrap for his preseason and he obviously dominated. In his five games, Leonard averaged 15.4 points, 5.2 boards, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.6 treys in just 22.2 minutes per game. He's an elite option and should be coming off the board in the same neighborhood as Karl-Anthony Towns. Friday, 9:44 pm
    Player Note

  • Robbie Hummel, Wolters waived
Nuggets waive F Robbie Hummel and G Nate Wolters.

Advice: Hummel had some talent earlier in his career, but the ACL surgeries hurt his chances to get going again. Friday, 9:36 pm
  • Pablo Prigioni returns on Friday
Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) returned on Friday with 10 points, one assist and two 3-pointers in 19 minutes.

Advice: He may not have been 100 percent, but coach Mike D'Antoni wanted to get a look at him. It's still unclear how the Rockets will handle the point guard minutes behind James Harden, but there likely won't be enough to matter for Prigioni to have value. Friday, 9:23 pm
  • D-Will, Wes, Harry B, Dirk & Bogut to start
Deron Williams, Wesley Matthews, Harrison Barnes, Dirk Nowitzki and Andrew Bogut will start on Friday.

Advice: Let's all hope Harry B can get it going. He's had a really rough time this month. Friday, 5:57 pm
  • Timofey Mozgov will be available for opener
Timofey Mozgov (tailbone) will be available for the season opener.

Advice: The Lakers will hold him out tonight after an injury scare on Wednesday. Mozgov has too many durability concerns to be counted on in fantasy leagues. Friday, 5:26 pm
  • D-Russ, Lou, Uncle P, Randle & Zubac starting
D'Angelo Russell, Lou Williams, Nick Young, Julius Randle and Ivica Zubac will start on Friday.

Advice: We will get a long look at the second-round rookie Zubac tonight. Timofey Mozgov (tailbone) should be good for the opener, though. Friday, 5:25 pm
  • Meyers Leonard (back) expected to play
Meyers Leonard (back) is expected to play on Friday night.

Advice: He went through a full practice on Thursday and it would appear he didn't have a setback. Leonard played 23 minutes back on Oct. 13 and hasn't played since. He was in a very favorable spot last year and couldn't get it going, but now it's going to be a lot tougher on a deep Portland squad. Friday, 1:38 pm
  • Derrick Favors (knee) still not practicing
Derrick Favors (left knee) did not practice on Friday.

Advice: Since his preseason debut back on Oct. 4, Favors has been on the injury report due to knee soreness. He had right knee soreness back in April and also missed one game due to left knee soreness in 2012. In other words, Favors' 25-year-old knees aren't in terrible shape. That said, he should be bumped down a round or two with this concern. Trey Lyles has added value. Friday, 12:14 pm
  • Terrence Jones goes off again with 24 points
Terrence Jones was phenomenal on Thursday, scoring 24 points with four rebounds, three assists, two steals, two blocks and two 3-pointers in 29 minutes.

Advice: Hey now. This comes on the heels of a 18-point game on Tuesday and he averaged 15.0 points per game in the preseason even before this beauty. Jones essentially took a pay cut to put himself in the best spot, and he appears to have made the right choice. Coach Alvin Gentry can use him next to Anthony Davis and both can guard fives depending on the matchup. He's solidified himself as a very nice late-round pick in almost all leagues. Thursday, 7:18 pm
  • Meyers Leonard (back) practices in full Thurs
Meyers Leonard (back) practiced in full with the Blazers on Thursday and is questionable to play on Friday.

Advice: Leonard spent the past two preseason games on the sidelines with the back issue, but he's on track to be good to go for opening night. In terms of fantasy hoops, Leonard really isn't an attractive target in most settings after last year's disastrous season. Thursday, 3:52 pm
  • Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) questionable Friday
Pablo Prigioni (left shoulder) is questionable to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Spurs.

Advice: If there's any doubt about the health of Prigioni's shoulder, you can bet that he won't be taking the court Friday night. Prigioni will turn 40 years old this season, and is not worth a draft pick in any setting. Thursday, 2:18 pm
  • Timofey Mozgov (tailbone) questionable Friday
Timofey Mozgov (bruised tailbone) did not practice on Thursday and is questionable to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Suns.

Advice: Mozgov still has a full six days to recover before the regular season opener, and he was reportedly feeling better on Thursday, so he should be fine for opening night. However, if his absence extends into the regular season, it'll be Ivaca Zubac and Tarik Black picking up most of his minutes. Thursday, 12:49 pm
  • Kyrie Irving (calf) doesn't practice Thursday
Kyrie Irving (left calf tightness) did not practice on Thursday.

Advice: The Cavs maintain that Irving is fine, but with the regular-season just five days away, they're going to be extremely cautious with their star guard. Additionally, the Cavs are reportedly looking to add another backup point guard to the roster via trade, because they'd like to keep Irving's minutes "relatively low" during the regular-season and they don't believe Kay Felder is ready to handle major minutes at the NBA level. Mo Williams and Jordan McRae are the most likely to be traded. Thursday, 11:39 am

  • Timofey Mozgov (tailbone) doesn't return
Timofey Mozgov didn't return to Wednesday's game after leaving with a bruised tailbone.

Advice: Mozgov took a nasty fall but he walked off under his own power, albeit with a slight limp, and he'll be reevaluated on Thursday. We're listing him as day-to-day until the Lakers' update his status, but deep-league owners should keep an eye on Ivaca Zubac and Tarik Black in case Mozzy ends up missing significant time. Wednesday, 10:12 pm
  • Derrick Favors (knee) questionable for opener
Derrick Favors (left knee) is questionable for Utah's season opener on Oct. 25, according to Jazz beat writer Tony Jones.

Advice: Jones wrote that he's "hearing [Favors] will be back for opener," but he also warned, "won't know his status until close to Tuesday ... he needs to practice first." There are obviously no guarantees that Favors won't begin the season with a DNP, but this is at least an optimistic tidbit for worried fantasy owners. Wednesday, 9:22 pm
  • Harry Bad: Barnes now at just 35.3 TS% as Mav
Harrison Barnes' disastrous preseason continued on Wednesday, making 1-of-9 from the field for eight points with three rebounds and two turnovers.

Advice: So it turns out Kevin Durant is an upgrade over Harry B. In the preseason, Barnes has a woeful 35.2 true shooting percentage, including just 17.1 percent on his jumpers. We've seen Barnes have rough stretches for months at a time, but needless to say the Mavs aren't feeling great about paying him. If he falls to the last few rounds, he still might be worth a late pick. Wednesday, 8:45 pm
  • Derrick Favors (left knee) sits out yet again
Derrick Favors (left knee) didn't play in Wednesday's preseason finale, as expected.

Advice: Favors hasn't practiced since Utah's preseason opener, which doesn't bode well for his opening-night status. He's dealing with IT band syndrome, which is related to overuse and causes pain during lateral movement, and rest is the primary prescription. There's enough risk here to bump him down a round or two on draft day. Wednesday, 8:37 pm
  • Meyers Leonard (back) out again Wednesday
Meyers Leonard (lower back) sat out again on Wednesday.

Advice: Leonard is dealing with soreness, which is understandable after a very long layoff following shoulder surgery. The Blazers haven't suggested that there's a structural issue here, so we're considering him questionable to rejoin the rotation on opening night. Wednesday, 8:34 pm
  • Meyers Leonard out again Wednesday
Meyers Leonard (back) will not play on Wednesday against the Jazz.

Advice: It'll be his second game out due to his troublesome back injury. Leonard will likely be limited in the regular season and his minutes are going to drop regardless. While he has upside, fantasy owners can take a wait-and-see approach. Wednesday, 4:39 pm
  • Pablo Prigioni is still out
Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) will not play on Wednesday and is expected to play on Friday.

Advice: With Patrick Beverley (knee) and Prigioni out, James Harden is going to handle most of the point guard minutes. Tyler Ennis should be in the rotation with around 15-20 minutes tonight. Wednesday, 11:39 am
  • Derrick Favors (knee) doubtful for Wednesday
Derrick Favors (left knee) did not go through shootaround and is not expected to play in Wednesday's exhibition game against the Trail Blazers.

Advice: Favors hasn't taken the court since October 3, and while IT band syndrome isn't typically a serious issue, the extended absence is concerning. Until we get some new info, we're going to consider him questionable for opening night, and with each day spent on the sidelines it's getting increasingly difficult to justify spending an early mid-round selection on Favors. If you do take the plunge on draft day, it would be wise to also invest a late-round selection in Trey Lyles as a handcuff pick. Wednesday, 10:19 am
  • Aron Baynes (nose) out Wednesday vs. TOR
Aron Baynes (nose) will miss Wednesday's preseason game against the Raptors.

Advice: Baynes underwent surgery on Tuesday to correct his broken nose, and he's currently being fitted for a mask. Boban Marjanovic should see some increased floor time tonight sans Baynes, but neither guy will be worth drafting in standard leagues, as they'll both see limited minutes behind Andre Drummond this season. Wednesday, 9:18 am
  • Evan Turner still adjusting to Stotts' system
Evan Turner is still adjusting to his new teammates and the style of play in Portland.

Advice: "He had a good rhythm," coach Terry Stotts said. "He missed some shots, but Evan is getting more comfortable every game. And we’re getting a little better at figuring out how to put him in better spots. It’s going to be about learning his teammates, getting comfortable with our style of play, all those things." Turner has shot just 33.3 percent from the field through the preseason, but efficiency has never really been one of his strong points. He'll likely come off the bench in Portland, so he's more of a late-round target in deep leagues. Wednesday, 7:44 am

  • Kenneth Faried appears headed for bench
Kenneth Faried came off the bench again on Tuesday and hit 4-of-7 shots for nine points, two rebounds and a block in 16 minutes.

Advice: It looks like Jusuf Nurkic will start at center and Nikola Jokic will get the nod at power forward, pushing Faried to the bench. He's been disappointing nearly every season he's been in the league and having to battle with Jokic for minutes and production could be a rough road for the Manimal. He's nothing more than a late-round fantasy flier right now. Tuesday, 8:07 pm

  • Terrence Jones scores 18 w/ two treys
Terrence Jones (knee contusion) returned to action in style on Tuesday vs. the Hawks, scoring 18 points with four rebounds, two 3-pointers and one block in just 20 minutes.

Advice: The Pelicans were running their offense through him and he showed no signs of any injury after he missed the previous two games. He finished 6-of-15 from the field and it's great to see him attempt five 3-pointers on the night. He's loaded with upside and may have to step up early on with Anthony Davis bothered by an ankle issue. He should see minutes at the four and five and is a nice sleeper late in drafts, but just keep his injury history in mind. Tuesday, 7:00 pm
  • Kyrie Irving (calf) will not return Tuesday
Kyrie Irving experienced some left calf tightness on Tuesday vs. the Wizards and will not return.

Advice: First things first, the injury sounds very minor, but the Cavs aren't going to take any chances here. We'll put him on the injury report, but we'd very surprised if his status for opening night was in jeopardy if this diagnosis remains the same. Kay Felder won the backup PG role with a strong camp and will benefit if Irving misses time. Tuesday, 5:04 pm

  • Terrence Jones (knee) available to play Tues
Terrence Jones (knee) will be available to play Tuesday vs. the Hawks.

Advice: Jones has missed the past two games with a bruised knee, which is pretty typical for the oft-injured forward, but it sounds like he could be back on the court for limited action Tuesday night. Jones does offer a good amount of upside with his ability to swat shots and hit triples, but staying healthy has been a major issue for him through his four years in the league. Still, he's on the radar as a potential late-round target in standard settings. Tuesday, 3:28 pm
  • Aron Baynes breaks nose at practice on Tues
Aron Baynes broke his nose during Tuesday's practice.

Advice: Baynes should be just fine for opening night, but he won't have much fantasy value at all while Andre Drummond is healthy. Tuesday, 11:07 am
  • Jazz confident in Gordon Hayward re-signing
The Jazz are confident they'll be able to re-sign Gordon Hayward (finger) when he becomes a free agent after the 2016-17 season.

Advice: Hayward is out four-to-six weeks with a broken left right finger, but the Jazz are confident they'll be able to keep him in Utah when he hits free agency next summer. "But fundamentally, if we do the right things here," said general manager Dennis Lindsey. "Let's just be honest, we have an advantage by having his Bird rights. There's a lot of money associated with the fifth year and higher raises." Hayward is targeting a mid-to-late November return and is still worth a pick in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts. Tuesday, 6:01 am
  • Greg Monroe scores 12 off the bench
Greg Monroe scored 12 points off the bench with eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block in 23 minutes vs. the Pistons on Monday.

Advice: The biggest takeaway from tonight is that Monroe's usage rate could actually be a lot higher off the bench, as he attempted 19 shots from the field, connecting on six of them. Miles Plumlee is the favorite to start, but Monroe should soak up the majority of the center minutes, assuming the Bucks give up on trying to trade him. Monday, 7:19 pm
  • Aron Baynes (back) plays 19 minutes
Aron Baynes (back) played 19 minutes on Monday with two points, four boards and one block.

Advice: The Pistons were expected to hold him out as a precaution, but Baynes convinced the coaching staff to let him play. He has a slight edge over Boban Marjanovic for the backup center role, but this position battle could go either way. Monday, 7:00 pm
  • Terrence Jones (knee) questionable Tuesday
Terrence Jones (knee) has been upgraded to questionable for Tuesday's game vs. the Hawks.

Advice: Jones has missed two games in a row and was listed as doubtful in the previous outing, so this can be viewed as a step in the right direction. The Pelicans are banged up right now and don't want to take any chances, so we'd still be surprised to see Jones out there. The Pelicans signed Quincy Ford to a training camp deal to provide some additional depth for Tuesday. For now, Jones is still considered a sleeper in the later rounds. Monday, 2:46 pm
  • Alex Len (back) goes through scrimmage
Alex Len (back spasms) was able to scrimmage on Monday.

Advice: He was in uniform for Friday's game, but he did not play. This is Len's first noteworthy battle with back spasms, so there's no reason to be concerned here. He's likely to split minutes at center with Tyson Chandler, but Marquese Chriss could eat into his playing time. Monday, 12:57 pm

  • Derrick Favors (left knee) out Monday
Derrick Favors (left knee) did not go through the morning shootaround and will not play on Monday vs. the Clippers.

Advice: This isn't a surprise considering he was listed as doubtful. The Jazz haven't provided a timetable and he's been out for nearly two weeks, so this is a little concerning. It should be the Trey Lyles show tonight with a sprinkle of Boris Diaw. Monday, 10:09 am
  • Aron Baynes (lower back tightness) out Monday
Aron Baynes (lower back tightness) will not play vs. the Bucks on Monday.

Advice: This will be his second straight game on the shelf. Boban Marjanovic is the most interesting man in the world and has looked dominant in limited preseason action, so Baynes is in danger of losing his backup role behind Andre Drummond. Monday, 9:23 am
  • Kay Felder has won the backup PG role
Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue confirmed that Kay Felder has won the backup point guard role.

Advice: "Right now we'll say he's going to be our backup point guard for right now," Lue said. However, Lue also added that the plan for running the offense when Kyrie Irving is out is to "do it by committee," meaning LeBron James and Iman Shumpert will handle the ball as well. Felder has looked great in the preseason and has scored 14 or more points in three out of five games, but his value will be limited while Irving is healthy. Monday, 7:33 am
  • Meyers Leonard (back) ruled out vs. Nuggets
Meyers Leonard (lower back) won't play vs. the Nuggets on Sunday.

Advice: Leonard said the injury bothered him during Tuesday's game vs. the Lakers, and he "felt it was best to rest" in a meaningless preseason game. We're considering him day-to-day until further notice, but this does nothing to help his shaky fantasy appeal in a crowded Blazers' frontcourt. Oct 16, 5:16 pm
  • Burks (knee, ankle) goes through agility work
Alec Burks (knee and ankle surgeries) "went hard" during an after practice agility work session on Sunday, according to Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Advice: Burks still hasn't been able to practice with the team, or take any contact, so his status for opening night is very much in jeopardy. Utah has a ton of depth at the guard positions this year, so it's going to be tough for Burks to make a difference in fantasy hoops. Oct 16, 12:16 pm
  • Derrick Favors (knee) doubtful Monday vs. LAC
Derrick Favors (left knee) is doubtful to suit up for Monday's preseason game against the Clippers.

Advice: Favors still hasn't practiced or played since the preseason opener, and with the regular season just a little over a week away, he's now in jeopardy of not being ready for opening night. The Jazz maintain that Favors' injury is not to be considered a long-term issue, but knee injuries for big men are nothing to shrug at. He's still too talented to let him fall out of the middle rounds on draft day, but there will now be some added risk in selecting a guy that only made it through 62 games last year. Trey Lyles will be the primary beneficiary if Favors is forced to miss any regular season action. Oct 16, 11:56 am
  • Greg Monroe and MCW getting the night off
Greg Monroe and Michael Carter-Williams will rest on Saturday.

Advice: We'll get to see more John Henson and Miles Plumlee tonight. Henson has played better than Plumlee, so that is something to watch. Both could wind up starting with Monroe in the second unit. Oct 15, 4:34 pm
  • Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) will not play Sat.
Pablo Prigioni (left shoulder sprain) will not play on Saturday vs. the Grizzlies.

Advice: He was doubtful coming in, so this isn't a surprise. Tyler Ennis could see some extended minutes with Patrick Beverley (knee) sidelined, as well. Oct 15, 3:28 pm
  • Stotts not revealing starting small forward
Blazers coach Terry Stotts is still deciding who will start at small forward this season.

Advice: It's a three-man race between Harkless and the two guys (Evan Turner, $70M; Allen Crabbe $75M) the Blazers gave a combined $145M to this offseason. "I will have a decision by Oct. 25," Stotts said. The prevailing belief is that Harkless is ahead of the pack, but all three guys will play a role in what the Blazers do this season. Unfortunately, there is considerable overlap between all of them and it really limits their individual fantasy appeal in the process. Oct 15, 3:21 pm
  • Aron Baynes (lower back) out Saturday night
Aron Baynes (lower back tightness) will not play on Saturday vs. the 76ers.

Advice: Stan Van Gundy called the big man the "most game-ready Pistons player," so we're assuming this absence is simply precautionary. Baynes is expected to open the season as Andre Drummond's backup. Oct 15, 1:34 pm
  • Report: Hayward (finger) is without timetable
Gordon Hayward (left ring finger) is without a timetable to return, according to Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Advice: Hayward was given a four-to-six week prognosis prior, and it's likely that the Jazz just don't want to announce anything publicly in order to avoid unnecessary questions and/or speculation leading up to his return. For now, we're still expecting Hayward to target a return around mid-to-late November, so anyone who drafts him should be prepared to spend at least the first three-to-four weeks without an important part of their fantasy team. Oct 15, 11:28 am
  • Derrick Favors (L knee) still not practicing
Derrick Favors (left knee, IT band syndrome) is still not practicing on Saturday.

Advice: It's been nearly two weeks since Favors hit the sidelines with this injury, and there is really no current indication of when he could be back on the floor. Although Quin Snyder does not believe the injury is a long-term concern, the updates have been few and far between and mostly speculative in nature. We're not knocking Favors down our draft boards considerably, but if you're trying to decide between the big man and another target in your draft, you'll want to consider this information closely and carefully before making your choice. Any length of absence for Favors in the regular season would mean more playing time for Trey Lyles as well as Boris Diaw. Oct 15, 11:19 am
  • Jazz not expected to add any depth at SG/SF
The Jazz are not expected to add any depth to fill the void left by Gordon Hayward.

Advice: Hayward's broken left finger will not require surgery and the Jazz are hopeful that he can make a "faster-than-expected recovery." His current timetable has him returning in late November, so he's still worth a pick in the middle rounds. Joe Johnson should start in his absence and Rodney Hood will have more responsibility. • Brandon Knight gets 25 minutes
Brandon Knight (knee) returned to action and made his first start of the preseason on Friday, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes.

Advice: Devin Booker (ankle) did not play in this game and coach Earl Watson decided to go back to his old backcourt starters from last year. Knight is going to come off the bench this year, which isn't a bad thing for a guy who can score and dish to his young teammates. Knight is still a decent target in the later middle rounds. • Kay Felder scores 14 with seven dimes
Kay Felder scored 14 points with three rebounds, seven assists and two 3-pointers in 28 minutes against the Bulls on Friday.

Advice: The Cavs still haven't figured out their backup point guard spot, which could be a big issue for them given Kyrie Irving's injury history. Felder is a joy to watch for his top-notch athleticism and we could see him make a splash at some point this year. Although, that would change if the Cavs sign someone like Mario Chalmers (Achilles). Oct 14, 7:27 pm
  • Alex Len off on Friday night
Alex Len (back spasms) will not play on Friday.

Advice: He was in uniform for the warmups and it doesn't sound serious, but it's never good to see back spasms pop up on the injury report. For now, he should be considered day-to-day.. Len should split the center minutes with Tyson Chandler after the power forward experiment failed last season. Oct 14, 6:36 pm

  • Brandon Knight will play; Alex Len will not
Brandon Knight (knee) will play against the Mavs on Friday.

Advice: His left knee tendinitis is not a concern and he should be good to go. Knight will come off the bench and should have a big-time usage rate and good assist numbers. Oct 14, 6:34 pm

  • Alex Len is questionable for Friday
Alex Len is questionable to play on Friday.

Advice: There is no reason given on Len, so it's possibly just rest. If he's out, there should be a lot of minutes available for Marquese Chriss and Alan Williams. Oct 14, 5:32 pm

  • Kay, McRae, Liggins, Holmes & Cory J starting
Kay Felder, Jordan McRae, DeAndre Liggins, Cory Jefferson and Jonathan Holmes will start against the Bulls on Friday.

Advice: Hey, at least there should be a whole lot of Felder and McRae. Oct 14, 4:21 pm
  • Brandon Knight questionable for Friday
Brandon Knight (knee) is questionable to play against the Mavs on Friday.

Advice: He missed Wednesday due to some left knee tendinitis. Knight hasn't had any noteworthy knee issues since 2013 and that was to his right knee. The fact that he's questionable for a preseason game is strong enough evidence that this isn't serious. Oct 14, 2:14 pm

  • Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) doubtful Saturday
Pablo Prigioni (shoulder) is doubtful for Saturday's game vs. Memphis.

Advice: It's a left shoulder sprain, so he's not going to play in a meaningless game. Regardless, Prigioni will not have any fantasy value as the third-string PG in Houston. Oct 14, 9:57 am
  • Evan Turner slowly adjusting to new team
Evan Turner said that he is slowly adjusting to his new teammates.

Advice: "A week ago I had so much trouble with the new plays,’’ Turner said. "Now, I’m more familiar with the plays, it’s just on the fly decisions, knowing in .6 of a second who to get where and how.’’ Turner ran the offense for the second unit on Thursday vs. the Clippers, but he really struggled and coach Terry Stotts said he is "still finding his way.’’ He's averaging 9.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 25.5 minutes during the preseason, shooting 37.5 percent from the field. As for the starting SF role, Turner has started one game compared to two for Moe Harkless, while Allen Crabbe has one as well. Oct 14, 7:01 am

  • Kyrie Irving makes just 5-of-15
Kyrie Irving made just 5-of-15 from the field for 13 points against the Raptors on Thursday, adding one rebound, eight assists, two steals and two 3-pointers.

Advice: He didn't have LeBron James around for this one and was the engine of the offense tonight. The Cavs do not have much depth behind Irving and he's coming into the season healthy, so he should have no problem clearing his 31.5 minutes per game. He makes sense at the end of the second round of a standard draft. Oct 13, 9:14 pm

  • Derrick Favors' left knee still inflamed
Jazz coach Quin Snyder said about Derrick Favors' left knee injury, "It’s got to get less inflamed ... presumably, he’ll be back sooner than later."

Advice: Favors is dealing with IT band syndrome, which causes pain when the knee moves laterally and is typically associated with overuse among runners. "I don't think it's anything we're putting a long timetable on," Snyder said. Favors missed 20 games last year, due largely to a nagging back injury, but in his first five seasons he averaged just 5.4 DNPs. We're considering him questionable for opening night. Oct 12, 10:35 pm
  • Alex Len makes 9-of-10 FTs, scores 15 pts
Alex Len fouled out of Wednesday's game with 15 points (3-of-10 FGs, 9-of-10 FTs), seven rebounds, one steal and one block in 20 minutes.

Advice: Tyson Chandler was ruled out due to a lingering hamstring ailment, and his long injury history is one more reason to like Len as a bounce-back candidate this season. Len's free throw shooting has improved each year in the NBA, to 72.8 percent last season, which lends credibility to tonight's solid mark at the stripe. He still needs to prove that last year's dips in FG percentage (42.3 percent) and blocks (0.8) were a fluke. Oct 12, 9:20 pm
