Commish Notes

  • Hola, muchachos!!

Eventful opening night in the NBA, with Gordon's poor foot almost severing completely & the Houston Rockets 2.0 sending a message to the defending champs of the Bay... The league sends its warmest regards to Hayward in hopes of an eventful recovery & relishes in the new Houston-GSW rivalry that exists within our present league roster.... Mark & Beau, please don't be afraid to take pride in the yesterday's win at the expense of our TOON SQUAD (also- toon squad?)... The GSW still are the runaway favorites to repeat so you gotta take the small victories when you can get them, even at the expense of proper sportsmanship.

Quick note about league scoring, & one that still isn't fully grasped by some of our veteran squads: In order to score a player's stats, he must be active in your roster! The fantasy app has a feature in which you need only click "start active players" (the blue print) to do this. Players on the bench (BN) won't count toward your weekly totals; utility players (UTIL) & all starters will... This is a major difference between NBA & other fantasy sports that exist in only a weekly format as this has to be done for every day of the week... However, it only takes a minute to set your line-ups for the entire week. You can set players as far in advance as you like. I usually make sure my team is set for the following week on Sunday, for example. Also, if you make a roster move (i.e trade, waiver pick-up) you roster may very well have to be re-set... Sounds time-consuming but is actually super quick and easy.

For example, in last year's playoffs, TOON SQUAD failed to set his line-up so his star players were essentially sitting on the bench, failing to accumulate stats & doubtless very frustrated about their lack of playing time... LL Fauntleroy took full advantage of the front office disfunction & cruised easily to the next round.

There will occasionally be times when you deliberately want to bench players for strategic purposes... Say, for example, you are one category ahead heading into Sunday & by benching a James Harden & his 8 turnovers, for example, you'd win that category & the consequently the week. You don't have to pay such close attention if you don't want to, but it's not too difficult once you get the hang of things & your team will benefit.

I'll try to chime in now & again so that everyone has a basic handle on things, but feel free to holler as you please. Perhaps do so in a public thread so that everyone can listen in.

    CTC, everyone.

  • Excellent draft, everyone! Special thanks to Garifrus a.k.a. Bold Goat for putting in an appearance possibly while feeding two twin babies. Impressive multi-tasking.

For anyone that still has questions about rules or strategy, please hit me up! If you are displeased with the way things worked out today, remember that there is plenty of time to amends things should you so please. If you recall, Johnny Hart was utterly disgusted with his team post-draft last season, but he found things to be much better than anticipated... Doesn't totally account for his Richie Tenenbaum-style playoff meltdown, but remember that in a tight 8-team draft every team should have at LEAST a couple bonafide stars to work with & many options down the road.

For people new to fantasy NBA, this is a 'head-to-head' league, which means you compete to win the best of nine categories every week against a specific opponent. Those categories are: points, rebounds, assists, FG%, FT%, steals, blocks, 3's, turnovers. If you can win 5 out of 9 every week you'd eventually plow through the playoffs to ultimate victory, in theory. That is where the strategy comes in...

Here are a couple basic articles detailing strategy:

Regular season doesn't start until the 17th of October, so nothing counts until then anyway. Take a minute to catch yourself up a little, or don't if you like.

Sadly the computer site still lacks the 'smack talk' feature but there is a chat option on the phone app... Do check that out, for individual or group correspondence. Needn't be smack, can also be benevolent talk or effusive praise if you're feelin sweet.

Most of you have met at some point in the past, but please do welcome Mark Honey & Beau Broussard over from our TX side... Mark & Beau, please meet Nick, Will, Matt Slater, descendants of men's trip veteran and our uncle Bob. If Matt seems abnormally salty for no reason, he may still be upset about losing in the finals last year. Otherwise a stand-up fella. Also evidently upset about a flippant trade offer from last year, which we now know rattles him to the core & may used to obtain a psychological advantage.

    Other things... Rasheed-isms:

"CTC" means "cut the check", which Rasheed Wallace used to piss off interviewers & to basically express that he doesn't give a shit.

"It was a good game, both teams played hard" - Sheed used to also say this over & over & over in interviews, not unlike Marshawn Lynch's lil gem about not wanting to get fined.

    We reference these often.

Ok I gotta run... Anything else I may have missed? Throw it in the comment section.

Stoked to have ya, & welcome.
